Hey Y’all, I was reading yet another book on running –go figure-and got to favorite chapters on strengthening and cross training. We all know how I puke when reading those chapters about shoe selection and schedules for training.
So this book “Complete Book of Running” from Runner’s World and edited by Amby Burfoot had this to say in the cross-training section.
“When the upper body tires, a runner tends to lead forward, which puts extra strain on the back muscles, causing the gluteal and hamstring muscles to become tense and tight.” This section was written by Budd Coates of Rodale Press and an active marathon runner.
Sure sounds a lot like the shoulder exercises that we do in beginner run class and in Chapter 3 of the new Coach K book “Learn to Run”. We have to start thinking of the whole body working as integrated machine.
Remember-we work smarter at Coach K fitness.
