WE should all recognize those immortal words from the classic children’s (or maybe grown up) book-“The Little Engine that Could” by Watty Piper. As a Coach, athlete and trainer, I have seen how attitude can make a huge difference.
Last night in an advanced conditioning class, we did a 1st time Commando Crawl with a loaded backpack. And much to my surprise, shock and then outrage, I saw 2 of my very good student make a paltry attempt and as they were side by side voiced how impossible it was and just collapsed.
In the “good ol days of martial arts” that would have brought out the bamboo stick. I resorted to very stern lecture on don’t quit-problem solve. Take some wgt out, change technique a bit, anything but DO NOT QUIT!
I have tons of admiration for the athlete who may come in last but is giving 100%.But when i have clients that are not living up to their potential or truly giving their best, i have asked them to change their attitude or change their coach. I have little tolerance for those not willing to struggle, sweat and suffer. I truly view running marathons, any athletic training as simple reflection with how you will deal with real life. Most of us are not racing for the 1st place finish, but we are testing ourselves. NEVER QUIT and remember it’s all mental.
TRAIN HARD, and TRAIN SMART…..use your brains to figure out a way to overcome.
