F=M x A, version 2

Okey dokey, here is the 2nd version of the old F=M x A equation.
This time we are talking about F= force or wear/tear on leg joints. When we run, we increase the Ground Reaction Forces (GRF) to 2-3x our bodyweight with each landing. Kind of scary isn’t it.  So do you think that mushy foam stuff on the bottom of your shoe is really absorbing ALL THAT pounding? I think it falls into the same category as High Top Basketball sneakers. People used to think that High Top Shoes would prevent ankle sprains. Then the research came out and showed that it only controls a teenie weenie bit of that ankle movement.
So let’s get back to your running. If that shoe cushion isn’t absorbing 100% of the GRF what is going to happen??? Do you think those weak ankles are likely to sprain? And those knees that are landing in poor alignment, what happens to your cartilage and/or ligaments?
Here are 2 things that YOU can do to stay healthy and enjoy running for a long time.
1.      Reduce the M.: add a good nutrition program to your new exercise program so you can drop a couple pounds. Your knees will be so much happier.
2.      Hire a knowledgeable Trainer with specific experience working with runners. He/She will show you some simple exercises that will improve both your running skills and joint stability.
Remember, here at Coach K fitness we train smarter.
